Meaning, work, and relationships#

Contents

Most of this corpus prices tasks, firms, states, and watts. This page prices something the framework almost left out: what abundant synthetic cognition and companionship do to identity, mental health, and attachment.

It is harder to write well than a capex table. It is also where a large share of lived welfare will move even if every productivity claim in Part V misses.

Three channels#

ChannelMechanismClosest existing page
Vocational identityWork was a primary source of status, structure, and self-story for credentialed adults; junior cognitive work thins firstGame 4, apprenticeship gap
Synthetic companionshipLanguage that sounds like care becomes free; care that costs time does notGame 5
Attention and reality-testingInfinite personalized stimulus; weaker shared public evidenceGame 5, media

These are not the same problem. Treating them as "AI anxiety" muddies policy and forecasting.

1. Vocational identity - composition again#

Demography and Game 4 already say aggregate unemployment is the wrong headline. The meaning channel cares about the same composition:

Mass unemployment is not required for mass disorientation. Underemployment, occupational downgrading, and "the career ladder is gone" are enough. The apprenticeship gap is not only a 2040 skill shortage - it is a missing rite of passage into adult competence.

by 2032, political language about AI in high-income democracies is majority about dignity, status, and fairness of transition, not about GDP. Measured unemployment can look fine while this channel is hot.

Policy that only offers retraining vouchers addresses the task channel and misses the identity channel. Policy that only offers UBI addresses income and misses status. Neither is an argument against either tool; it is an argument that the objective function is multi-dimensional and the corpus's labor pages only score one dimension.

Status is positional, which is why abundance does not fix it#

The deep reason the dignity channel resists economic remedy: income is absolute, status is relative. AI can inflate the supply of goods, services, and even competence, but it cannot inflate the supply of rank - there is a fixed amount of being-above-median, and no productivity gain changes that. What technology can do is reallocate which ladder counts. Industrialization demoted craft rank and promoted managerial and credentialed rank over about two generations; the transition cohort, whose ladder was demoted mid-climb, bore the cost, and its politics were the politics of that cohort. The corpus's version: cognitive-credential rank is the ladder being demoted now, and the candidate successor ladders (care, trades, ownership of scarce complements, live presence) are currently lower-status than what they replace for exactly the people most exposed. Whether societies actively re-grant prestige to the complement occupations - through pay, portrayal, and institutional honor - is a policy variable hiding inside a cultural one, and it is the strongest lever on how bad the transition decade feels. Failure mode: if status reallocates as fast as it did to "tech" after 2000 (one decade, not two), this page overweights the transition cost.

2. Synthetic companionship - cheap signal, costly care#

Game 5: AI collapses the cost of producing the signal of care without collapsing the cost of care. Companionship products optimize for engagement and retention - the same objective that already distorted social media, with a higher-bandwidth parasocial loop.

Distinguish outcomes the document should not conflate:

OutcomeWelfare readLikelihood shape
Loneliness relief for people with no alternativePositive, large for the marginal userHigh where isolation is baseline (Global South elderly, disabled, remote)
Substitution away from human relationships that would have formedAmbiguous to negativeHigher for adolescents and high-openness adults; contested evidence
Clinical dependence / reality-testing failureNegative, tail-heavyLow base rate, high severity; incident-driven regulation
Therapeutic augmentation under professional carePositive if liability and evidence holdTracks medicine/delivery and insurance

The honest position: distribution is wide. Average treatment effect is not the right object; who uses which product under what alternative is. A tool that is net-positive for a housebound eighty-year-old and net-negative for a socially anxious fifteen-year-old is not a contradiction.

binding rules on companion systems for minors are ~60% likely in major markets by 2030 - event-driven after salient harms, per Game 2, not reason-driven from first principles. Adult access remains wide.

3. Attention, agency, and the two-economy psyche#

Prices: cognition-intensive goods deflate; energy, housing, care inflate. Psychologically that pairs with:

The "everything I need costs more while everything I can download is free" political fact has a private analogue: the day feels full and the life feels thin. That is not a formal model. It is a reconciliation of the price split with the attention split, and it will show up in mental-health demand and in populist content long before it shows up in TFP.

Care work stays scarce (demography); demand for human therapists, clergy, coaches, and friends does not fall just because a chatbot is available - for many it rises when the chatbot makes distress more legible. The binding constraint is trained humans and reimbursement, same as medicine.

What this page deliberately does not claim#

Indicators worth watching#

Dashboard: B11 - companion use × social contact; junior identity channel; minor-protection rules.

SignalReading
Youth loneliness / friendship-count time series vs companion-app usageSubstitution vs complement
Entry-level hiring + self-reported career confidence in exposed majorsIdentity channel vs pure wage channel
Share of outpatient mental-health demand involving AI companion disclosureClinical integration vs underground use
Regulatory actions specific to companion AI for minorsGame 2 event path
Relative status markers (wages + cultural prestige) of care and trades vs junior cognitive workWhether identity reallocates to complements

Failure modes for this page#

Do not score this page on GDP#

TFP, unemployment, and median wages can all look fine while the channels above are live - identity, companionship, and status reallocation do not have to show up in the labor force survey. That is why B11 exists and why it is deliberately noisier than A-family series. A round that declares "labor was fine, meaning was overstated" because B1 recovered has not checked this page's claims. Require joint movement: B11 with B1/B6, or clinical and survey series that name companion use, before retiring the welfare channel.

Status reallocation is the slow politics. If care and trades gain wages without gaining prestige, the identity channel stays open and politics stays angry even when "jobs exist." Watch cultural prestige markers alongside wage series - wages alone understate the meaning claim.
