# Guilds, Mediated by Cryptography

For about a century, civilization ran on a quiet arrangement that almost nobody ever said out loud: writing was hard, so writing was evidence.

A thoughtful cover letter proved somebody spent an evening on it. A polished essay proved a student had wrestled the material. A detailed product review proved a customer existed and cared. A well-argued cold email proved the sender was worth a reply. None of these documents was valuable in itself. Each was valuable as a *receipt*, proof that scarce human effort had been burned on your behalf, and effort was the one thing that could not be faked at scale.

Economists call this signaling, and the whole machine rests on one assumption: the signal has to be expensive for the person faking it. AI did something surgical to that assumption. It collapsed the cost of *producing* every text-shaped signal without collapsing the cost of *possessing* the quality the signal advertised. The essay is free. Being the person the essay implies is as expensive as ever.

The manager in the middle of that drawing is every evaluator in the economy now: two identical documents, two wildly different production costs, and no way to bill the difference. [The corpus](../02-games/5-information.md) states the consequence flatly: the signal and the substance have come apart, and every institution that relied on them moving together is now running on a broken instrument.

## The obituary list, and the one rule underneath it

Dead or dying as signals, per the corpus: the college essay. The cover letter. The take-home assignment. The photograph as evidence. The recorded voice as identity. Most written credentials. Product reviews. The SEO article. The cold email. The polished GitHub contribution graph. The thought-leadership post.

That list looks like carnage until you ask what its members share, and then it looks like a law. Every one of them is **asynchronous and unwitnessed**: produced somewhere else, at some other time, with nobody watching. That is the entire diagnostic, and it is worth naming so it can be applied to signals not on the list. Call it **the Witness Test**: a signal survives to the extent that its production is observed, or costly in a way generation cannot fake. Apply it to anything, your hiring process, your assessment stack, your evidence rules, and it sorts the survivors from the walking dead in one pass.

The little graveyard in that drawing is not a prediction. Most of those stones are already planted. The strange part of the present moment is the flowers: institutions still requiring cover letters they know are generated, reading applications with tools they know are fooled, holding funerals for signals while listing them in job postings.

## What replaces them is old

Now the forecast half, because the interesting question is not what dies but what fills the vacancy. The replacements, already visible: in-person and synchronous evaluation. Cryptographic provenance, content credentials stamped at capture. Track records with stakes attached. Reputation graphs. Institutional vouching.

Read that list again slowly, because everything on it is socially *older* than what it replaces. We are heading back toward **guilds, apprenticeships, and personal reputation, mediated by cryptography.** The pre-modern world solved trust for conditions where documents could be forged and strangers could not be checked, which is precisely the world the internet just re-entered. The wax seal, the guild examination, the master who vouches for the apprentice: each is returning wearing new clothes, and the corpus tracks the return as [an indicator](../07-indicators/diffusion/labor.md), not a metaphor.

Look at who is waiting behind the apprentice in that drawing: modern applicants holding the exact devices that killed the old signals, queuing for a technology that predates them all by five centuries. Education is the cleanest early case: [the education page](../03-domains/cognitive/education.md) predicts that by 2030 selective employers in exposed professions weight supervised work samples, apprenticeships, and invigilated assessment over GPA-and-essay bundles. Teaching gets cheaper while assessing gets more expensive, which is the strangest sentence in the whole corpus and follows directly from the Witness Test.

Two mechanical predictions ride along. First, on the open web, an Akerlof lemons spiral: as synthetic content's share rises, the average value of anything unverified falls, and readers retreat to walled gardens with provenance inside. The corpus scores the enclosure of the open web as roughly **85% likely to be substantially complete by 2030**, and files it as a genuine loss, because the open web worked by keeping publishing cheap enough to be democratic and just costly enough to be a filter. Generation deleted the filter and kept the cheapness.

Second, within the verification rebuild, detection loses to attestation. A detector classifying finished content plays an adversarial game against generators that improve by erasing exactly the signal the detector needs, so every detector generation is a temporary advantage that its own deployment erodes. Attestation, binding content cryptographically to a capture device at creation, makes no claim about the content at all, only about its origin, so generator progress is irrelevant to it. Institutions betting on detection will cycle through tools and quietly abandon them. The durable infrastructure converges on attestation plus reputation, which is why the corpus's [C8 indicator](../07-indicators/governance.md) tracks provenance adoption and ignores detector accuracy, and why a label law without capture-time cryptography is theatre with a compliance cost.

That treadmill is every detection vendor's roadmap. The robot at the crank is turning it with one finger.

## "People will just get better at spotting AI text"

They will not, and the belief that they will is itself becoming a vulnerability. But suppose the objection in its strongest form: models keep tells, detectors improve, the arms race stays balanced. Even then the signal is dead, for a reason upstream of detection. A signal works only while the *receiver* believes it is costly. The moment a hiring manager knows that any cover letter might be generated, every cover letter stops carrying information, including the honestly written ones. Signaling equilibria die of doubt, not of proof. The forger does not need to win the arms race. The forger only needs to exist in sufficient numbers that the receiver stops updating, and that threshold was crossed for most text signals somewhere around 2024.

The subtler version of the objection is that evaluators will rebuild rigor. Here the corpus is bleak in an instructive way: verification is a commons on the evaluator side too. Careful checking is costly to whoever performs it, and its benefits leak to everyone who relies on the same judgment, so each evaluator rationally free-rides on the presumed diligence of the others. The senders' equilibrium broke overnight. The receivers' rebuild requires coordination among free-riders, which is the slower problem. Expect verification to be rebuilt first where a single party eats the full cost of being wrong, underwriting, security clearance, high-stakes hiring, and last where checking was always subsidized by professional pride.

## The sting: the cheap signals were the democratic ones

Here is the part of this story that deserves more attention than it gets, and the reason this post is not a neutral obituary.

The signals that died were disproportionately the ones *outsiders* could use. The strong cover letter, the polished portfolio, the well-argued cold email: these were exactly the channels through which someone with no network, no pedigree, and no proximity could demonstrate quality to a stranger. The replacements, in-person evaluation, institutional vouching, reputation graphs, track records with stakes, all price in prior access. Whom you know. Where you already are. Who will vouch.

The person outside that circle was the cheap signals' whole constituency. The wind taking the page is not a comment on its quality. The page is superb. It is a comment on its readership, which is now zero.

So verification scarcity is not distributionally neutral. It quietly shifts screening weight back toward the pre-meritocratic filters that cheap signals had partially displaced, and it does so while wearing the costume of rigor. The one counterweight the corpus flags: cheap cryptographic attestation of genuinely earned track records, portable, verifiable, staked reputation, could rebuild an outsider channel better than the one that died. Whether it gets built is a design question, not a market inevitability, which is exactly why it leads [tomorrow's post](what-to-build.md).

## What would prove this post wrong

- **Provenance becomes universal and cheap.** Attestation in every sensor and model, at capture, by default. The lemons spiral slows, the open web partially recovers, and the enclosure forecast misses its 85%. This is the good failure, and its scorecard form is C8's infrastructure trigger.
- **Learned verification gets good enough** for high-stakes text. Institutions stop paying for synchronous assessment, and the guild reversion stalls, because a model that reliably judges quality restores the broken equilibrium from the other side. This is [Uncertainty 5](../06-uncertainties/learned-verification.md) again, the same hinge the scoreboard post named, now applied to trust rather than training.
- **Assessment fails to revert.** If by the end of 2030 selective employers and institutions still run on essays, take-homes, and asynchronous credentials, with no majority shift to witnessed evaluation, then the equilibrium was more durable than the mechanism predicts, and this post overestimated how fast receivers stop believing.
