Marginal cost of content → 0.

Therefore **attention and curation are the scarce goods**, and authenticity becomes a premium product.

## Why authenticity commands a premium

Not because synthetic work is worse. Often it isn't.

Because humans value provenance for its own sake - the way handmade goods survived industrialization as a luxury category. The value is in the knowledge of how it was made, which is a fact about the object's history rather than its properties. That is not a preference AI can satisfy by getting better, which is what makes it durable.

## What to expect

- **Live performance appreciates sharply.** It is the one format where presence cannot be faked and the verification is free.
- **"Made by a person" becomes a marketed and certified attribute** - which requires the provenance infrastructure from [Game 5](../../02-games/5-information.md) to exist. The certification is the product.
- **The middle is obliterated.** Competent commercial work - stock imagery, corporate video, functional copy, library music - is the most exposed category in the economy.
- **Both ends expand.** The top (genuine originality, personal connection, parasocial relationship) and the bottom (infinite free slop) both grow.

## The barbell

This is the clearest instance of a pattern that recurs across [Part III](../README.md): the distribution goes barbell-shaped. What survives is either irreplaceable or free. What dies is everything that was merely competent - which is, unfortunately, how most people in creative fields actually make a living.

| Survives / grows | Dies / commoditizes |
|---|---|
| Live, in-person, high-trust presence | Mid-tier commercial illustration/copy/stock |
| Provenanced / attested human work | SEO content mills (already dying) |
| Elite brand + taste curation | "Competent enough" agency production |
| Infinite free personalized slop | - (this is the other barbell end) |

## Game 5: lemons on the open feed

[Game 5](../../02-games/5-information.md): as synthetic share rises, average value of *unverified* content falls → retreat to walled gardens with provenance → enclosure of the open web (~85% substantially complete by 2030 on that page's assessment).

Media is where that plays out daily:

- **Platforms** become the scarce distribution and verification layer (or fake it)
- **Creators** monetize relationship and live access more than unit content
- **News** splits into authenticated brands vs pure engagement sludge; local news lacks the brand moat and gets hit worst

This is not only "misinformation." It is **Akerlof dynamics on attention markets.**

### Provenance is attestation, not detection

The engineering point that decides whether the certified-human market can exist: detection of synthetic content is a losing game (the generator trains against the detector), but **positive attestation is not.** C2PA-style provenance does not prove content is human; it proves a specific capture device or signer vouched for its origin, and stripping the mark destroys the claim rather than forging it. That inverts the burden correctly - the default becomes "unattested, assume synthetic" - but only if three parties move together: capture hardware signs at the sensor, platforms surface the mark, and audiences learn to miss it when absent. Each has weak individual incentives, which is why [C8](../../07-indicators/governance.md) tracks adoption rather than assuming it. The stated failure mode above (provenance never sticks) is really this coordination failing, not the cryptography.

### Superstar economics, amplified

The barbell has a prior name: Rosen's superstar economics (1981) - when distribution is cheap and quality is even slightly rankable, demand concentrates on the few at the top. Streaming already ran the experiment on music. Generative AI turns the dial further by making the *replacement-level* competitor free, which pushes the minimum viable career from "competent" to "irreplaceable to a specific audience." The middle does not die because audiences turn cruel; it dies because the price of adequate falls to zero while the supply of attention stays fixed. What grows alongside the stars is **curation as labor** - editors, playlist and taste brokers, community moderators of authenticated spaces - the humans paid to spend attention so others do not have to.

## Meaning, identity, and labor

[Meaning](meaning.md): vocational identity for writers, designers, musicians, and video workers lands in the barbell's dead middle. Status and income compress toward:

- Stars and live acts (inelastic presence)
- Technical/adjacent roles (prompt ops is not a career ladder; tooling ownership and taste are)
- Non-market or hybrid patronage

[Education](education.md): creative credentials signal even less when portfolios are forgeable; invigilated and live review become the filter. Same cost inversion - teaching craft materials is free; assessing authenticity is expensive.

> **Prediction:** by 2030, a majority of mid-market commercial creative budgets (SMB marketing, mid-tier brand kits, stock replacement) are majority AI-produced by cost, while **top-decile cultural spend** (live, celebrity, luxury provenance) rises in real terms. Barbell, not uniform replacement.

## Platforms capture more than models

[Game 3](../../02-games/3-firms.md): model vendors compete; surplus accrues to **distribution, data about attention, and payment rails**. Media platforms that own the feed and the identity graph capture more than the generators. "AI studio" pure-plays face Red Queen unless they own a channel or a rights library.

Rights and training-data litigation is a **legal** complementary fight ([law](law.md)), not a capability one - it reallocates rents among studios, platforms, and labs without restoring the mid-tier job.

## What to watch

| Signal | Reading |
|---|---|
| Share of feed content with C2PA / provenance marks | Certification infrastructure real → [C8](../../07-indicators/governance.md) |
| Live-event ticket prices vs streaming ARPU | Presence premium |
| Mid-tier creative employment / rate cards | Barbell middle dying |
| Platform take rates on AI-assisted creator tools | Who captures surplus |
| Youth media diet: authenticated vs anonymous synthetic | [Meaning](meaning.md) / attention channel |

## Failure modes

- **If provenance never sticks** (easy to strip or ignore), authenticity premium stays pure brand storytelling and enclosure accelerates harder.
- **If audiences stop caring about human origin**, the handmade analogy fails; only attention scarcity remains.
- **If regulation forces labeling that works**, mid-tier human work may retain a compliance niche longer than the barbell implies.

### C8 as the public-good test

[C8](../../07-indicators/governance.md) asks whether provenance is built as infrastructure (capture-time attestation with consumer-visible trust UX) or only as private gardens. Media is where the answer shows first: feeds, ad markets, and courtroom evidence are the high-volume use cases. A world of working C8 looks like a thinner authenticity premium *outside* gardens - verification becomes a default rather than a brand. A world of failed C8 looks like this page's barbell at full strength: verified islands, a lemons open web, and [Game 5](../../02-games/5-information.md)'s costly-signaling collapse complete. Labeling mandates without attestation are the privacy-class miss applied to media - rules that create compliance cost without measurement, and that this page should not mistake for the infrastructure path.

### Mid-tier is the casualty class

Elite authentic brands and fully synthetic sludge both have strategies. The squeezed layer is **mid-tier human production** - good enough to be replaced by models, not famous enough to sell provenance as luxury. Watch rate cards and employment in that band, not only creator-economy headlines at the top.

**Presence premium is the surviving rent.** Live events, invigilated performance, and authenticated creators sell scarcity of co-location and skin-in-the-game - Game 5's costly signals as product. Score live vs stream ARPU and authenticated feed share, not total content volume.
